Marcus Aurelius

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (26 April 121 – 17 March 180 AD) was a stoic philosopher. He was the last of the rulers known as the Five Good Emperors. He served as Roman consul in 140, 145, and 161 AD. Marcus studied Greek and Latin under tutors such as Herodes Atticus and Marcus Cornelius Fronto. He modifi ed the silver purity of the Roman currency, the denarius. His work Meditations, written in Greek while on campaign against the Sarmatians and Germans between 170 and 180 AD, is still revered as a literary monument to a government of service and duty and has been praised for its “exquisite accent and its infi nite tenderness.”
