Jack London

John Griffith Chaney, known as Jack London, was an American novelist and journalist, famous for "The Call of the Wild" and "White Fang." Born in San Francisco, his mother, Flora Wellman, claimed his father was astrologer William Chaney, though Chaney denied paternity. Raised by John London and the Prentiss family, he grew up in Oakland. London left UC Berkeley after discovering his mother's troubled past and went to the Klondike during the gold rush. "The Call of the Wild" brought him international fame and success. He was also an advocate for socialism and workers' rights.
