Impact of Physico-chemical Parameters and Inorganic Nutrient Ions on Seasonal Algal Composition in River Churni, West Bengal, India

Abstract
This study has been done to assay seasonal algal composition of the River Churni, West Bengal, India in different seasons in relation with some physico-chemical parameters and some inorganic nutrient ions needed for algal growth and diversity during the months January to December, 2023. Algae act as important ecological indicator to assay pollution. To understand the algal growth pattern in the water of River Churni following physicochemical parameters like Temperature (˚C), pH, Conductance (µS/cm), Hardness (ppm), TDS (ppm), Dissolve Oxygen (ppm), Salinity(ppm), Turbidity (NTU), total Alkalinity (ppm), Biological Oxygen Demand (mg/l) as well as nutritionally required inorganic ion concentrations sodium, potassium, calcium, carbonate, bicarbonate, nitrate, chloride were also evaluated during study period. Result of the study clearly indicate a positive relationship among chosen environmentally variants and algal abundance during every seasons. Major group of algae recorded during observation were Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae and Bacilariophyceae. Species of, Spirogyra, Chara, Nitella, Lyngbya, Chlorella, Nostoc were abundant in the rainy season and Autumn and Diatoms such as Coscinodiscus, Nizschia, Pinnularia viridis in the winter season. During summer it was observed that growth of most of the algal species were rare to absent. Canonical Correspondence Analysis of the observed data also signifies strong relationship between environment variants and seasonal algal composition.
