A Case Study on Prioritising Species for Treatment of Diseases based on Ethno Botanical Indices

Abstract
A total of 30 ethno botanically significant plants of Angaan Ching Eco-Park, Kakching district, Manipur have been collected, studied and calculated for their Fidelity Level (FL) and Informant Consensus Factor (ICF). Of the 30 species studied, 15 species show high fidelity levels of 60% and above that highlight the importance of these plants in treating the cited diseases in the study area. Emblica officinalis Gaertn., Psidium guajava L., Phlogacanthus thyrsiformis (Roxb. ex Hardw.) Mabb. and Centella asiatica (L.) Urb. have a fidelity level of 100 per cent showing that they are frequently used by the local people for the treatment of different ailment categories. Species with 100 per cent FL value are prioritised for maximum effective use by the local people in the village. In this study, the ICF values are found to be varied from 0.76 to 1.0. Disease categories such as circulatory disease, injuries, nervous system disorders, sensory system disorders, mental disorders and inflammations have comparably high ICF values of 1.0. The present study provides preliminary information required for various phytochemical studies on the most used plants.
