Ethnobotanical, Phytochemical and Pharmacological Potential of Grewia asiatica L.: A Nutraceutical Plant

Abstract
Grewia asiatica L. is a small tree or shrub cultivated for its edible fruits commonly known as Phalsa. The fruits of Phalsa possess a high nutritional value including various vitamins (A and C), minerals and fibre with meagre calories and fat constituents. The plant contains various bioactive compounds, phytochemicals, tannins, amino acids, and anthocyanin and due to the presence of these phytocompounds, the plant and its different parts have been used as an ethnomedicine and nutraceutical since pre-historic times.The fruits of phalsa comprise antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antiemetic,antipyretic, analgesic, antihyperlipidemic, anticancer, hepatoprotective and radioprotective activities. Besides its tremendous potential as a traditional medicine and a functional food in ethnomedicine, the plants of phalsa remain underutilized. The present study aimed to evaluate the ethnobotanical uses, and phytochemical and pharmacological properties of Grewia asiatica L.
