Ethnobotany, Phytochemistry and Pharmacology of Carissa carandas L. in North Eastern Terai Region of Uttar Pradesh, India: A Review

Abstract
Carissa carandas L. is used as food and herbal medicine throughout India, which is commonly known as Karonda, belongs to the family Apocynaceae. The ethnobotanical uses of food and medicine were narrated in many traditional systems. All plant parts were utilized in treatment of diseases. Bioactive molecules such as alkaloids, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, phenolics, tannins and triterpenoids highlighted the nutraceutical potential. Ethnopharmacological significance of the plant were glorified due to presence of many bioactive of food, medicine and both as nutraceutical value. These were as constipation, hepatoprotective, anthelmintic activity, cardiovascular, diuretic activities, cytotoxic potentials, diarrheal activities, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial activities, anti-oxidant, antipyretic and anti-ulcer. The present review provides immense knowledge to ethnobotany, bioactive compounds, pharmacology and nutraceutical potential of fresh and processed food products as homemade food recipes and herbal medicine formulation.
