Abstract
Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), a member of Solanaceae family, mostly cultivated tuberous crop cultivated by Kodaikanal Hills farmers as a starchy vegetable. Short duration and high yielding crops like potato requires plenty of fertilizers. Phosphorus is needed for starch synthesis, tuber development and tuber growth. Supplementing with Phosphorus chemical fertilizers were expensive, limited in supply and affects soil ecology. In Phosphate-Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) have a substantial impact in influencing plant growth and increase Rock Phosphate agronomic efficiency and P fertilizers. It is ability to convert insoluble P to soluble form that may be readily absorbed by plant roots. Therefore, fertilizers from microbial origin like PSB used for efficient phosphate solubilisation and utilization which will results in increased potato tuber growth and productivity. In this present study, a field trial was carried out in the field of Potato plants in the Kodaikanal Hills using randomized block design with three replications. Growth, yield, metabolic parameters of potato tubers measured at the time of harvest. The PSB treated potato crops could produce higher yields and could increase the overall production of potato tubers.
