Echoes of the War is a short story written by J.M. Barrie, the Scottish author best known for creating Peter Pan. This particular piece, published in 1918, was written during and in response to the First World War, a period of immense suffering and upheaval in Europe. The story is not just about a single individual’s experience but about a widersocietalissue: the invisible scars carried by countless soldiers and civilians in the wake of war. It is a work that captures the complexityofhumansuffering during a time of massive loss, and it urges the reader to recognise that the true cost of war is often far greater than what appears on the surface.

J. M. Barrie

People best remembered, Scottish author and dramatist James Matthew Barrie. His most famous creation, Peter Pan, is attributed to him. He was raised and educated in Scotland before relocating to London, where he went on to write many popular plays and books. He met the Llewelyn Davies boys there, who served as his inspiration for two of his works: the 1904 West End play Peter Pan, also known as The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, and a novel about a baby boy who has wonderful adventures in Kensington Gardens, (first included in Barrie's 1902 adult novel The Little White Bird), then to write Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, a 1904 West End.
